Woman pleads guilty to embezzling $18,000 from Saginaw County construction equipment business

Saginaw, Mich. – An Owosso woman pleaded guilty to embezzling five-figure sums from a construction equipment business in Saginaw County.

Victor B. Wagner, also known by the last names Smith and Sumbera, posted on Monday, November 11th. Appeared before Saginaw County Circuit Judge Andre R. Borello on the 14th and pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement of between $1,000 and $20,000. The charge is a five-year felony.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss nine additional charges: seven counts of speech and publication and two counts of computer crime.

Wagner, 48, agreed to pay $18,435.31 in restitution at a monthly rate of $1,000. Her suggested sentencing guidelines are zero to nine months, and prosecutors have no objection to Wagner receiving probation.

Wagner is employed by AIS Construction Equipment, 4600 Zelle Drive, Bridgeport, which rents out large equipment. Part of Wagner’s duties involved handling checks written to businesses and large amounts of cash, Bridgeport Township Police Chief David Duffett said.

July 17 to December. On February 29, 2020, Wagner deposited a check made out to AIS into her own bank account. AIS reported the alleged theft to police in February this year.

Police arrested Wagner on April 25.

Judge Borrello will sentence Wagner on January 1 at 1.30pm. 11.
