Carrie Lake, who backed Donald Trump in 2020 to lie about voter fraud, has lost his bid to be Arizona’s next governor.

Close race with Democrat Katie Hobbs in one of America’s most important races US midterm elections Since Arizona is a battleground state, it is expected to play a pivotal role in the 2024 presidential election.

Ms. Lake has vowed to ban mail-in voting in the state, which conspiracy theorists falsely claim is vulnerable to fraud.

“Democracy was worth the wait,” Ms Hobbs tweeted after the race was announced.

Her defeated opponent expressed contempt for the election, tweeting that “Arizonans know it’s BS when they see it.”

Her defeat capped a successful week for Democrats, who dashed Republican hopes of a “red wave” in the midterm elections.

Democrats retained control of the U.S. Senate after holding on to seats in the swing states of Arizona and Nevada, with Vice President Kamala Harris holding a tie-breaking vote.

The party could win outright majority control if Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock defeats Republican challenger Herschel Walker in Georgia’s Dec. 6 runoff.

Ms. Lake, a former television news anchor, is part of a string of Trump-aligned Republican candidates who have lost races in key states.

Voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin also rejected election deniers in the races for governor and other statewide electoral positions.

However, the Associated Press reported that Republicans were just one victory away from taking control of the 218 seats they need in the House of Representatives, which would allow them to stymie President Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.
