Teenage girl breaks into grandmother’s safe, steals $13,500, shares it with classmates | U.S. News

A 14-year-old girl has caused a stir at a Florida school after she allegedly distributed more than $10,000 (£8,800) from her grandmother to classmates.

Police entered Lake Weir Middle School on Thursday after reports of a student giving students hundreds of dollars each, according to an arrest report.

The school is located in Summerfield, approximately 60 miles northwest of Orlando.

Deputies said school officials searched the girl’s backpack and found around $2,500 (£2,211).

The teen said an unnamed former student gave her money and wanted to share it.

Investigators said they later determined the girl had broken into her grandmother’s safe and stole around $13,500 (£11,942) of her life savings.

The arrest report did not say why the girl took the money or why she gave it to her classmates.

By Friday, officials had recovered around $700 (£619) of money distributed to other students – as well as cash in backpacks.

The girl is facing a grand theft charge.
