Skowhegan opens small shop during Small Business Week

SCOHIGAN, Maine (WABI) – While it seems like everyone is shopping in Skohegan, they’re making a point of going to the small store.

Small Business Saturday kicks off Small Business Week and will run through December 10th. 3.

Organized by Main Street Skowhegan this week, more than three dozen businesses participated.

“We are happy to be able to shop small every day of the year, and as a local organization that really wants to revitalize Skowhegan, we recognize the importance of small shop shopping year-round. A time to celebrate shopping locally, it helps our small retailers kick off the holiday season,” said Kristina Cannon, Executive Director of Main Street Skowhegan.

What was once a one-day event is now a week-long event, during which anyone can claim one of 600 Savings Passports for special discounts and rewards at participating locations.

Shoppers can also fill out a sweepstakes ticket after each purchase for a chance to win a gift card.

Main Street Skowhegan said they were excited to help support their community.

“When you spend money locally, most of that money goes back into the local economy. Businesses pay taxes, they support local sports teams. So it’s important to make sure you shop locally and support local businesses,” Cannon added.

One local business owner said the push has resulted in more business for her store than it did on Black Friday.

“It was crazy. On Black Friday, we started, and people were coming in. It was nice and steady. And then on Shop Small Saturday, one after the other. Sometimes, at this little store in Thrifty Chic Boutique, I can have up to 16 people at a time,” says Kylie Brown, owner of Thrifty Chic Boutique.
