No more “business as usual” with China

BERLIN, Nov 2 (Reuters) – Germany wants to find areas of cooperation with China but relations cannot remain “business as usual”, a senior German government official said on Wednesday ahead of Chancellor Olaf Schultz’s visit to Beijing.

Berlin wants to level the playing field in trade relations and hopes China can help persuade Russia to end the war in Ukraine, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The official added that Scholz wants to ask China’s Xi Jinping all the tough questions and doesn’t see addressing human rights issues as interference in China’s internal affairs. (Reporting by Andreas Rinke; Writing by Matthias Williams; Editing by Miranda Murray)
