Newnan takes care of business

The Newnan Lady Cougars played a big part in the first round of the state high school volleyball playoffs Wednesday night.

In front of a raucous home crowd at the Max Bass Arena, Nuenen advanced to the second round with a straight set victory over Woodstock.

The final scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-20.

It was their 33rd win of the season and their 15th in a row.

Mattie Lovett once again provided power from the front. She had 18 kills in the match and ended the first and second sets as the winner. She has the front row and intimidates opponents with laser-like strikes with speed and speed.

Ironically, this was only the eighth of 42 matches over two sets. Head coach Precious White said after the game: “We changed a few things, we re-synced. Overall, we did well in sets one and two, we just have to figure out how to play against all of us in set three. Cylinder to shoot.”

The Cougars return to action Saturday with a home game against the North Forsyth Lady Raiders (40-7). The Lady Raiders were the regular-season champions in Region 8-6A, but were eliminated and the No. 2 seed in the regional tournament in Jackson County.

It will be a rematch of the 2017 season, when the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Raiders in five sets, including the fifth set 15-10 that cemented the Cougars victory.

North Forsyth was fifth in the standings at the end of the regular season, while Newnan was seventh.
