His rep confirmed that the rapper took off and was shot dead at a party in Houston, Texas.
The 28-year-old Migos star was shot dead at a private event at a bowling alley.
According to reports, Takeoff – whose real name is Kirshnik Khari Ball – had been playing dice with bandmate Quavo at the time of the shooting.
A man was shot in the head or neck, according to police.
Quavo – whose real name is Quavious Keyate Marshall – is believed to be safe and sound.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at 810 Billiards & Bowling shortly after 2:30 a.m.
Dozens of people gathered on a balcony outside the bowling alley on the third floor when they arrived to find a man dead, police said.
Two other people were also injured and taken to hospital by private vehicle, according to officials.
Police Lieutenant Ronnie Willkens said security guards in the area heard the shooting but did not see who did it.
Along with fellow rappers Quavo and Offset, Takeoff is best known as a member of Migos, considered one of the most influential rap groups of their generation.
Fans and friends were quick to pay their respects on Twitter, with boxer Chris Eubank Jr. writing: “Can’t believe I have to say it again about another young black star being killed for no reason, this industry It really has to change.”
Takeoff was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia in 1994 and began performing with his uncle Quavo and cousin Offset in 2008.
Originally calling themselves the Polo Club, they changed their name to Migos in 2011. Versace, their first mainstream hit was released in 2013 and later remixed by Drake.
The group’s biggest successes were their 2016 collaborations with Bad and Boujee, MotorSport with Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, and Walk It Talk It with Drake.
The Grammy-nominated trio also played fictional versions of themselves in an episode of the hit 2016 TV show Atlanta.
Takeoff released his only solo album – The Last Rocket in 2018.
Just a few weeks ago, Takeoff released the Only Built for Infinity Links record as a duo with Quavo, without a third Migos member, Offset.
