A new study suggests that microneedling and cupping therapy may help rejuvenate the skin.
“Cupping therapy can be added to microneedling and used to increase certain desired effects on the skin,” said lead author Burak Pasinlioglu, Kecioren Research and Training Hospital turkey explain.
“This combination may provide a simple and effective way to improve skin quality in plastic surgery practice.”
To conduct the study, the researchers observed single microneedling sessions on the skin of anesthetized rats.
A group animal One underwent microneedling, while the other underwent both microneedling and a brief cupping session.
Another group of animals received three separate sessions of microneedling or cupping.
What did the research reveal?
The rats were left for a month to recover from the treatment, and then analyzed for any skin changes at the cellular level.
The results showed an improvement in animal skin thickness.
The researchers found that the outer layer of skin increased from about 24 microns with a single application of microneedling alone to 42 microns with microneedling and cupping.
There was no change in skin thickness after increasing the course of treatment.
Microneedling also showed an increased ratio between type 1 and type 3 collagen in the skin.
An increase in type 1 collagen was associated with younger looking skin, and the ratio of type 1 and type 3 collagen was not significantly affected by the addition of cupping to microneedling.
The findings also suggest that a combination of microneedling and cupping may be useful in facial rejuvenation treatments.
The authors of the study concluded: “The additional benefit of microneedling negative pressure may prove to be a simple and practical approach with synergistic effects.”

What is the difference between cupping and microneedling?
“Many studies have shown significant benefits of microneedling for skin regeneration and scar healing,” says Dr. Pasinlioğlu and co-authors had said.
Microneedling is a non-surgical treatment commonly used to promote skin regeneration.
During the procedure, thin needles are placed in the top layer of the skin to create small holes that then stimulate the skin’s healing process.
Cupping is a slightly older method that involves placing special cups on the skin for a few minutes to create suction.
People choose this treatment as a form of relaxation to help reduce pain, blood flow, and more.
