Dothan, Alla. (WTVY) – 50 Alabama businesses were scammed last year, and they lost 15% more money compared to 2020.
The Better Business Bureau is concerned the problem will get worse, saying it is small business owners who are most at risk.
These threats become more serious as thieves become more creative. Everyday scams, such as “potential scam” calls or text messages from numbers you don’t know, are easier to spot than scams aimed at small businesses.
For small businesses, they might offer “very good” deals on magazines, or promise top-notch office supplies, but only upfront. Before business owners know it, they’ve lost thousands of dollars.
Better Business Bureau Vice President Monde Donaldson said: “The best thing a business can do to protect itself is to prepare ahead of time and do research, train employees on what to look for. Make sure the people you do business with are who you think you are. .”
The easiest way to check is the Better Business Bureau Scam Tracker. This is an easy way to see if you have been scammed or report a scam so it doesn’t happen to others.
