Holiday business begins rollout at Holden storefronts

Houghton, Mich. (WLUC) – Houghton storefronts are gearing up for a flood of business from the community in the coming weeks.

However, at stores such as Surplus Outlet on Shelden Ave, supply chain issues remain an issue.

Owners have been doing their best to keep prices from rising due to inflation.

“We’re lucky. We don’t have a lot of price changes,” said Tina Jurkanis of Surplus Outlet. “The cost of shipping and freight has tripled over the past two years and we’ve been able to avoid price increases for our customers.”

Owners expect a lot of business around some of their favorite holiday products.

“Winter socks, wool socks, we have Alpaca and Smartwool and different ones,” Jurkanis continued. “Bedroom slippers are a huge Christmas idea for everyone because warm feet are so important.”

Flowers at Slieman’s Memorial Road. Christmas trees will be provided shortly after Thanksgiving.

However, some types of products may not be available this year, according to Sleeman’s owner, Tony Sleeman’s Flowers.

“We’re definitely going to have a lot of trees this year, and they may not be certain types,” Slimane said. “We have a lot of different varieties, but maybe not some this year.”

However, Sleeman’s offers Christmas tree deliveries to families in the Houghton/Hancock area.

They also keep costs down by making their own decorations.

“For wreaths and wreaths, etc., we can bring the cost down a little bit because we’re not buying from wholesalers,” Slimane continued. “We do everything internally ourselves, right here.”

As Houghton’s two-day Ladies Night continues…

Swift Hardware, also on Shelden Ave., has a variety of different products and promotions.

“We’ve got 50 percent off buy one, get one free, and we’ve got a wide variety of food,” said Marilyn Swift, owner of Swift hardware. “We’ve got great coffee, and we’ve got sodas. We’ve just got a variety of s things.”

Ladies Night runs from noon to 8pm Friday
