City of Santa Barbara launches online business license portal and changes renewal system

SANTA BARBARA, CA – The Santa Barbara Department of Finance announced it will launch an online business portal and move to a calendar year business license renewal system.

The new business portal for applying, renewing and paying for business licenses is now fully accessible online.

All current business licenses will expire in December. 31 times a year, starting this year.

Any business that has paid a 2023 license fee will be eligible for a tax credit on their 2023 tax liability, which needs to be renewed by January 1. 31st, 2023.

Beginning Jan. 3, in-person business license applications, renewals and payments will be offered at City Hall at 735 Anacapa Street, alternating Monday-Thursday 9am-2pm and Friday 9am-2pm

All existing businesses will receive a letter in the first week of December 2022 with more information on the new process.

City officials said the changes were made to improve tax and permit administration services and enhance customer service.

Keith DeMartini, Chief Financial Officer, said: “Implementing an online portal that allows online payment by credit card and standardizes the renewal process will make the process easier, more transparent and efficient, ultimately saving time and money. “
