Maine is another state that uses ranked choice voting in federal elections to determine the winner. Results reported so far reflect voters’ first choice. In ranked choice voting, if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated and their votes are assigned to the voter’s second choice. The process continues until 50% of the candidates are cleared. Ranked selection listings are scheduled for Tuesday, November 15th.
- Second District of Maine – Democratic Rep. Jared Golden and former Republican Rep. Bruce Poliquin could see their race determined for the second time by the state’s ranked choice voting system. As of Sunday afternoon, neither candidate nor independent candidate Tiffany Bond had won 50 percent of the vote for the district that covers much of northern Portland. Trump could have led by 6 points in 2020. In 2018, Golden replaced Poliquin after votes were redistributed under the ranked choice system.
